so called invincibility

I've always heard about how young people think they are invincible. They are in a sense. They can eat whatever, drink whatever, do whatever, etc. etc. and yet not suffer from the long term effects of it until many years later, given they live to a ripe old age.

What many do not realize is that life is ever so fleeting. Sickness, handicaps, and the such all can inhibit one to fully live life. Knowing this, why do the young'uns still do such foolishness? Is it because they either they don't know any better, doing it out of boredom, or just for kicks?

If the end result is death and for the reasons listed above, why are the young ones still doing so? It probably cannot be explained, all I hope is that they wise up sooner than later.

something beautiful

A while back I heard my friend say that they stopped loving someone. Their remark had got me thinking. Can we stop loving someone? Is this possible?

After much thought, I concluded this cannot be so. Love comes from God and if our God is the living and everlasting God, than how can something as beautiful as love cease? Now I know I must sound oh so hopeless romantic, but still, think about it.

Many times I have heard the analogy of one's heart as a pie. Once someone significant comes into their life, they begin to share the pie with that someone. If for whatever reason that someone leaves, they also take a part of the pie with them. That part of the pie can never be reclaimed or put back.

How then can we stop from letting our pies be picked apart and left with nothing? We cannot but must trust that God will take care of us and help us find that someone who will not take it for granted.

under the weather?

Recently there has been this wave of hot weather, somewhere around 100+ degrees Fahrenheit more so humid making it extremely unbearable. Today, however was only a mere 85 degrees making today very comfortable.

So what is the point of me complaining about the weather? With this sudden drop in temperature made me appreciate the relief and that sometimes things are a lot better than they seem. Once you've seen the worse you don't mind seeing the bad.

Be grateful and appreciate what you have now. When it's gone, you might not ever get it back.

"Idols"

I've realized that I and I'm pretty sure other people do this too in that we put too many people on pedestals. Why do we idolize the people that we do?

Maybe because we are so entranced by what they have done and know no other one like them? This could be a reason, but time and time again these "idols" have failed me and I lose hope in these people. When hope is lost, it takes too long of a time to rebuild and regain that hope.

So are we not to hope in people and put them on pedestals? I'm not even sure anymore. If we do, do so with a grain of salt.

Families that pray together...

The other day I came into church and sat way in the back as usual. As I was reading the bulletin waiting for service to begin, I noticed out the corner of my eye a grandmother and her 2 grandchildren. They went into the pew in front of me and sat down and from that moment it stirred up something in me.

I was happy to see this instance in somebody's life. Some grandmother I do not know bringing her 2 grandchildren to church. These kids are really young, probably 8 at the oldest. I remember at that age, nobody can sit still for more than 2 seconds. I expected them to be standing up and crawling in/on/under the pews, just hyperness. Yet she brought them in and sat them down, and it is from this instance I realized how much she really loved her grandchildren.

How many families still bring in their kids to hear the Good Word? I know a lot of them do maybe out of habit, maybe because they really do feel that they need it. It really is a blessing to hear it and be able share it with your family and friends. I can't describe that feeling but it's a good one. Hallelujah!

new (and old) kids on the block

Disclaimer: No, I'm not writing about that boy band from the late 1980s nor am I writing about that song by LFO.

Spring is indicative of many things. One of those many things is that prospective freshmen and their family can be seen everywhere on whatever college campus.

It really amazes me how these students come and walk around campus looking as lost as lost can be, sit in on classes, and all that other stuff they do. They invade our libraries, our dining halls, our living spaces, our private spaces, and just everywhere you go, they go. Eager as eager can be and SOOO ready for that whole 4 of the (fill in the blank) years' experience. But be on the lookout, these young folks have so much potential and could end up being the next Nobel Prize winner or dictator.

For whatever reason this also reminds me of the older kids who are in class with us from time to time. I'm talking about that old guy or that lady that sit WAAAY in the front or WAAAY in the back. I think they're really encouraging to current college folk because they are SO on that ball, in that they either have been away from school for whoever knows how long and yet want to jump back again in this academia thing or still trying to finish that degree. They always seemed to be prepared and done all the readings. You gotta give them their props.

All this pondering makes me reflect on my learning experience. We can't take this edumacation thing for granted. Go get it and make something of it.

Job 1:21

"Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised."

I read this verse one day and thought about it in its context. In a matter of one chapter or 20 verses or so, Job lost everything he had. Job was livin the good life. He was wealthy in all aspects all thanks to God, but in a matter of moments, all of it was gone.

This chapter of Job draws to an end with the verse above. Every time I read this verse, for whatever reason, I could not figure the second part as to why he would depart naked. Wouldn't Job be buried with clothes on? But as I was reflecting on this one day, it hit me. We come into this world literally and metaphorically naked and leave this world metaphorically (hopefully not literally) naked.

As newborns we are born not knowing how to communicate or do anything but what is innate. A lot of stuff we learn as we grow and we accumulate wealth, power, etc. etc. as well. But when we die we cannot take any of it with us.

So I guess what I'm getting at is, be grateful for what you have, enjoy it while you can, and thank God everyday for what you have and who you are.
